HAnnah Bays
HANNAH BAYS (b. 1982) is a rising London-based surrealist. She graduated from the Royal Academy Schools (UK) in 2015.
Bays is a fresh voice emerging from a strong lineage of female surrealists, following in the footsteps of 20th-century titans such as Leonora Carrington (1917–2011), Dorothea Tanning (1910–2012), and Leonor Fini (1907–1996). Working across painting and works on paper, the forms in Bays’ darkly humorous pieces are never quite as they seem. Anthropomorphising nonhuman objects and animals, her characters harness a sense of the uncanny to explore existential human truths. Jarring us out of our comfort zones, they compel us to look again.
