Brandon Sheer
BRANDON SHEER is a film photographer from New York City.
With an abundance of newly acquired time during the lockdown, Brandon turned to personal and creative introspection. For much of his life, he identified as a musician - a title he wore like a medallion, almost interchangeable with his first name. But with the near collapse of the music industry in 2020, he began to seek another form of artistic expression.
After buying a cheap point-and-shoot film camera on eBay, photography quickly became his constant companion. 35mm was his analog gateway, eventually leading him to follow in the footsteps of American road trip photographers like Walker Evans, Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, and Alec Soth. He now works with an 8x10 view camera. Sheer’s images evoke melancholia and isolation while also searching for connection and commonality among the strangers he encounters on his travels.
Since completing his MA at the Royal College of Art in 2024, he has continued work on his ongoing photo book We’ve Become Like Strangers. Alongside his personal practice, he has shot editorials for The Wall Street Journal and campaigns for Mr. Porter, Tiffany & Co., Diptyque, and Simone Rocha.
